A week after the disasterous storms & tornadoes shocked Alabama, we are all still reeling.  Small steps towards beginning the healing process have started across our state and relief efforts are in full swing.  You can still help aid the relief efforts put forth by the American Red Cross in many ways…one of them being a financial donation during our 5th Annual Red Cross benefit: Taste of the Gardens.  We began doing this fundraiser for the Red Cross back in 2007, and each year since has become bigger and better - yielding critical funding needed by the Red Cross to provide relief for disaster victims.

Ready, set, taste! 

We’re gearing up for our annual “Taste of the Gardens” a benefit supporting The American Red Cross of Central Alabama on Thursday, May 5th from 5-8pm!  Join us at our East Montgomery store location (8820 Vaughn Rd) for an evening filled with delicious tastings from Montgomery’s finest restaurants and caterers, a silent auction featuring work from local artists, a 20% shopping discount (valid during event hours only), and special guest….author and baker extraordinaire, Patricia “Sister Schubert” Barnes!  Sister Schubert will be on-hand signing copies of her latest book (filled with fabulous recipes…including her famous rolls!), Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.  If the book sounds familiar, it should – we carry it at both store locations and even have a few signed copies available.  However, we highly encourage you to come get your copy signed by Sister in person – she’s a fantastic local woman (originally from Troy, Alabama),  who turned a simple idea into an entrepreneurial empire! 

Regardless of your preference to orange & blue or crimson & white, both Auburn and Alabama fans alike will be thrilled with the chance to bid on 2011 season tickets to all home games during the silent auction!

Change is on the horizon at our stores and we couldn’t be happier!  We’ve upped the ante and added several Monrovia “plant fashion’ boutiques throughout both store locations – which means greater visual impact and TONS of new plant varieties being offered! 

Monrovia Nurseries of Azusa, California, a respected grower-provider of high-quality nursery plants for more than 80 years, has chosen Southern Homes & Gardens as one of the few independent garden centers in the nation to feature the Monrovia ‘plant fashion boutiques’.  These ‘fashion boutiques’ show gardeners how to combine plants of similar growing requirements to achieve more interesting and colorful landscape areas.  For example, combining evergreen, dwarf magnolias, hollies and Euonymus with lilacs, forsythia and quince will result in more year-‘round interest and color changes.
