Fall Farmers Market: Meet Bulger Creek Farms, LLC

Uncategorized 26 Comments »

We are gearing up for our Fall Farmers Market (Saturdays, 7:30am – 12noon) October 9th – November 6th (Vaughn Rd store location only) and want to introduce one of the many featured farmers that will be there…

We’re pleased to introduce Bulger Creek Farm, LLC:

Located on 80 beautiful acres 20 miles west of Auburn (near Notasulga, Alabama), Bulger Creek Farm is owned and operated by Kyle and Melanie Payne as well as adult children, Willie and Amanda.  In the beginning, goats first arrived on the farm by recommendation of a physician – the easily digested goat milk was known to aid in the correction of certain digestive problems.  As the herd grew,  so did surplus milk!  Family friends soon encouraged the marketing of the products being made from the surplus.

When the limited liability corporation was formed in 1998, Bulger Creek Farm, LLC was the only licensed goat dairy in Alabama.    Bulger Creek Farms 100+ goats produce milk for gourmet goat milk, goat milk cheeses (both soft and hard), goat milk soaps, lotions and moisturizing creams.  As the old economic rule of supply & demand goes, when the customer base grows, so does the goat herd!  It is Bulger Creek Farms goal to eventually run a herd of 150 animals to ensure the milk volume for a longer season of production.

Bulger Creek Farm, LLC is a licensed goat dairy and a licensed cheese manufacturing plant – they also hold a county health department certificate in order to produce cheesecakes from their commercial kitchen – can we say, YUM?

All of Bulger Creek Farms milk is produced on their farm under strict guidelines – never using imported curd to make any product.  Everything is produced on their farm, here in Alabama.  This makes Bulger Creek Farm, LLC one of the few goat dairy choices for a fully Alabama-produced product!

Bulger Creek Farms is also a featured Alabama Farmer in the October 2010 issue of Southern Living magazine!

Pecan Wheel is a mix of white goat cheese, cheddar cheese, onion, garlic, and other spices.  This perfect blend is then dusted in pecans.

Veggie Wheel is ideal for the health conscious customer.  It is a blend of goat cheese with sun-dried tomatoes, carrots, parsley, and spices.  This makes an impressive appetizer.

Dessert Wheel is goat cheese with chocolate chips, confectioner’s sugar, and coated with pecans.  It is quite delicious served with vanilla wafers for a European style dessert.

Hard Goat Cheeses include: Feta, Cheddar, and Blue Rind , and Tipsy Chevre.

TIME TO PLANT:  Fall is the ideal time to plant trees, shrubs, cool season grasses, perennials, and cool season annuals such as pansies and violas.

Apply pre-emergents now for prevention later

Apply pre-emergents now for prevention later

  • APPLY A PRE-EMERGENT:  To control winter weeds such as poa annua (annual bluegrass), henbit, chickweed and others, apply a pre-emergent to your Bermuda or Zoysia lawn around mid-month.  Do not apply to a fescue lawn if you plan to sow seed in the fall.  Not only will it prevent weed seeds from germinating, it will also prevent the grass seed from germinating.

  • PLANT PANSIES:  Remove your tired summer annuals, prepare the bed, and plant cool season annuals such as pansies, violas, ornamental cabbage and kale, snapdragons, Swiss chard, and mustard.  These plants will provide some much needed landscape color throughout the fall and winter months.
  • Buy spring blooming bulbs, but wait to plant them!

  • BUY SPRING-BLOOMING FLOWER BULBS:  Buy tulips, daffodils, crocus and others now while selection is best, but wait until November-December to plant them.  Store them in the refrigerator in paper, not plastic bags, until time to plant.
