TREES

No decision affects your garden more than the numbers & types of trees you plant. So save yourself a lot of time & trouble by selecting the right tree for the right application. Lawn trees should cast light filtered shade & be deep rooted. Trees that shade decks, patios & parking areas shouldn't drop leaves or fruit. Use deciduous trees to help shade your house in the summer & in the winter when they lose their leaves the sun can help heat your home thus helping to reduce electricity use. Always consider a tree's mature size before planting too close to our home, driveway, deck or patio.

Apple Tree (Pyrus malus)

Type: Trees

Environment: Full sun

Height: 20' tall, 20' wide

Growing Season: Deciduous

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: White/pink (Spring), Fruiting in Spring

There are many different types of fruit trees & varieties. Make sure to ask if the trees need a pollinator. Apple trees that do well in our area include "Anna", "Granny Smith" and "Yellow Delicious".

Dogwood (Cornus florida)

Type: Trees

Environment: Part Shade / Shade

Height: 20'-25' tall, 20'-25' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter),Deciduous

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: White, pink, red (Spring)

These trees make a great show in the Spring. Covered in flowers prior to leafing out in Spring. Once established, can tolerate dry soils. Prefers pH of 6.5, but will do okay in soils that are not acidic. Best planted as an under story tree.

Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green in Spring/Summer, Red/yellow in Fall

Flower/Fruit: Spring, heavy aroma

There are various types of Magnolias that range in height from 8' -80' tall. Magnolias are known for their large saucer-shaped white flowers and glossy deep-green leaves.

Maple Tree (Acer rubrum)

Great shade trees, many different varieties & leaf color from which to choose. Fast growing & sturdy.

Oak Tree (Quercus robur)

Type: Trees

Environment: Full sun

Height: 30'-90' tall, 30'-50' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter),Year-round (slows in winter),Deciduous (except live oak-evergreen)

Leaf: Green in Spring/Summer, Red/yellow in Fall

Flower/Fruit: Spring, inconspicuous

Most are slow growing, but extremely sturdy & long lived. Great shade trees.

Weeping Willow Tree (Salix babylonica)

Type: Trees

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 50' tall

Growing Season: Deciduous

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: N/A

Beautiful long, weeping stems with long green leaves to make a great shade tree. Has to have lots of water. Be careful planting near irrigation systems, septic tanks, pools or ponds. Root syestem will go straight for water.
