SHRUBS

Just because shrubs help to form the gardens “backbone” doesn’t mean it can’t be colorful. Many of these plants put on a show every bit as striking as that of annuals & perennials. Shrubs can also make good screens with dense foliage from top to bottom. They can block unwanted views, create privacy, edge a walk or a path, lessen the effects of noise & wind, & provide a pleasant background for other flowering plants.

Euonymous (Euonymous fortunei)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 10' tall, 3'-4' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green/yellow, yellow/green, white/green

Flower/Fruit: Green/white in Summer

Flowers are inconspicuous, great as specimen plant, can be used as a hege, but disease & insects are more likely when done as a hedge.

Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Part sun

Height: 2'-8' tall, 3'-4' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: White flower, sweet-scented

Evergreen shrub with beautiful, sweet-scented flowers, great for landscaping . Varieties include those with small single daisy or semi-double to double blooms.

Holly (Ilex x)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 3'-20' tall, 3'-12' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: White flower (Spring), Red berries (Spring & Summer)

Great for hedges & screens. Can be made into tree. Smaller varieties have a round, natural shape, taller varieties (4'-8') can be made into hedges, 8' or taller tend to have a natural 'Christmas tree shape'.

Indian Hawthorne (Rhaphiolepis indica)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 3'-10' tall, 3'-4' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green

Flower/Fruit: White/pink flower, blue/purple berries

Ligustrum (Ligustrum japonicum)

Type: Shrubs

Height: 15' tall, 4'-6' wide

Flower/Fruit: White flower in Spring & Summer

Great for hedges & screens. Can be made into tree or topiary form.

Loropetalum (Loropetalum tobira)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 4'-12' tall, 4'-6' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green, maroon

Flower/Fruit: White/lavender flower

Nandina (Nandina domestica)

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 2'-12' tall, 2'-4' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: Green, red, purple

Flower/Fruit: Red berries in Fall

All varieties are good for use in the landscape. Tolerates all types of conditions (weather & soil wise). Berries are great to use in arrangements. Berries are POISONOUS.

Pittosporum (Pittosporum tobira 'variegata')

Type: Shrubs

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 3'-5' tall, 3'-6' wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: green & white

Flower/Fruit: White flower in Spring

Has a round, uniform shape. Tolerates drought & sandy soils. Looks great in the landscape. Leaves are very attractive with glossy, creamy white variegation.
