ANNUALS

Flowering annuals provide quick, nonstop color & come in a nearly boundless variety of colors, shapes, & sizes. yes, most die after one growing season, but that gives you a chance to try something new. Cool-season annuals prefer cool weather, blossoming in spring & fall (& in mild climates, winter). Warmseason annuals hate frost but love the heat, generally blooming from late spring to fall.

Begonia (Begonia semperflorens-cultorum)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 6'-24' tall, 8'-12' wide

Leaf: Big, round green/reddish-brown leaves

Flower/Fruit: Red, pink or white flowers

Begonias with green leaves need to be in part shade to full shade, the reddish-brown leaves can go in full sun to part shade. Moist soil is best.

Coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 12'-36' tall, 12'-24 wide

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter),Spring-Fall

Leaf: Many different colors, wide leaf shape

Flower/Fruit: Blue/white flowers

Pinch flowers back & it will keep the plant full & pretty rather than tall & skinny. Will tolerate moist or dry soils.

Geranium (Pelargonium)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 15"-20"

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter)

Leaf: round or kidney-shaped leaves are velvety and hairy, soft to the touch, aromatic, edges indistinctly lobed and scallop toothed; most selections show an area of deeper color just inside edge of leave

Flower/Fruit: symmetrical flowers either singly or in clusters

All Geraniums do well in pots; they bloom best when somewhat pot-bound. Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage new bloom.Pinch growing tips of young, small plants to force side branches. If planting outside make sure the soil drains fast.

Marigolds (Calendula officinalis)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 12'-24' tall, 8' wide

Growing Season: Spring / Summer

Leaf: Long, green leaf

Flower/Fruit: Flowers can be yellow, orange or multi-colored. Bloom late spring-early fall.

Great bedding plants, fast growing & tolerates many different growing conditions. Moist soil is best.

Petunia (Petunia x hybrida)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / Full shade

Height: 6'-15' tall, 8'-12' wide

Leaf: Small green leaves

Flower/Fruit: Multi-colored flowers

Flowers & leaves are fragrant. Make great carpet groundcover or do well in hanging baskets. Will tolerate moist or dry soil.

Snapdragon (Antirrhinum)

Type: Annuals

Environment: Full sun / part shade

Height: 6'-36' tall

Growing Season: Year-round (slows in winter),Spring-Fall

Leaf: Long, slender leaves

Flower/Fruit: Flowers vary in color

Whether you get the tall or short variety, these flowers are absolutely adorable in flower beds or in pots with other annuals. They are tolerant of most conditions & work well with other plants.
